The Paliyar Community
The paliyans are the nomadic dravidian tribals living in the South Western Ghats montane rain forests in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
They are most popular tribal community in the kodaikanal region. They are traditional nomadic hunter-gatherers, honey hunters and foragers. Yams are their major food source. Earlier, they used to live in rock crevices and caves.
Paliyars are a very peaceful and peace living community who are masters in conflict resolution and indiscriminate in nature. They lead a wonderful life of co-existing with nature and lead by the ethics of conservation. They were the protectors of forests for thousands of years.
They also have a deep distinctive knowledge of herbs and natural medicine. Recent studies have documented at least 150+ herbs used by these people to treat various illness.
They have a lot to teach us!
